about

These three works are from James Hullick's series of “text” compositions. That is, the musicians receive instructions for playing the work through headphones while they play the work. Tyger Tyger and Arachnoid were premiered in Switzerland (2011), but have not been played in Australia. Woman Falling was premiered at the Footscray Community Arts Centre in JOLT’s 2011 concert series. Each work has a different take on what can be done with the text score, although the text in each work tells a story that the audience will never hear. Only the musicians hear it. Tyger Tyger tells of a relationship meltdown from the deranged perspective of the man involved. Arachnoid is part of a larger opera without words and tells of a man who transforms into a spider. Woman Falling tells of a woman who jumps from a falling building. Arachnoid features the voice of James Hullick performing the character Le Scatterman and drum kit solos by Sean Baxter. Tyger Tyger sits around solo work by Adam Simmons. Tyger Tyger references the 'concerto' idiom.

about

JAMES HULLICK Melbourne, Australia

From the outside looking in, James Hullick's creativity seems boundless, manifesting sound worlds from inventive machines, art music, rock, electronics, acoustic instrumention, found objects, the human voice, sonic ensembles and the uncanny mergings of these things.

“Hullick is a social critic. He holds his people and the world of sound up to a mirror” (Reutlingen Press, Germany.)
